The project, covering an area of 310 square meters, retains the original façade of the classical residence. However, the interior has been significantly modernized. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows have been installed, extending the indoor space and improving natural lighting. The original gray bricks of the wall have been partially replaced with transparent glass bricks, adding a touch of contemporary visual art to the structure.
One of the unique features of this renovation is the preservation of the original wooden beams, rafters, and rafters. These elements not only add a rustic charm to the residence but also serve as a reminder of its rich history. The courtyard, equipped with a bathroom, has been transformed into a comfortable living space, complete with a wooden sitting area that offers a splendid view of the surrounding mountain scenery.
The renovation project also boasts of several green building technologies. The cold winter house utilizes a variety of insulation techniques, including the use of aluminum glazing glass and a re-stratified roof. The outer wall is made of a polyurethane insulation layer, while the inner wall is partially made of a vacuum board insulation layer. The heating system combines ground air source heat pump water floor heating with electric floor heating.
Despite the modern upgrades, the renovation project faced several challenges. The boundaries of the walls of the old house were blurred, and the roof wooden structures were irregularly constructed. To overcome these issues, the design team had to modify the drawings and practices on site to meet the site conditions. The gray tile on the roof and the original building walls also had to be repaired with protective design and construction.
The Beijing Old House Renovation project is a testament to Li Shuai's innovative design approach. It showcases how traditional architecture can be preserved and modernized, resulting in a living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The project was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
